Ini dia seri BlackBerry teranyar sekaligus yang paling modern yang dihadirkan RIM (Research In Motion), yakni BlackBerry Torch 9800 atau yang diberi sebutan ‘Torch’. BlackBerry Torch mempunyai penampilan desain baru, yakni berlayar sentuh plus qwerty geser. Selain tersebut BlackBerry Torch pun sudah mengadopsi sistem operasi terbaru, yakni OS BlackBerry 6.

Dan Torch menjadi seri BlackBerry yang dibekali OS teranyar ini. Seperti sudah disebutkan, Torch berdesain tombol qwerty geser. Dalam suasana tombol qwerty tersembunyi, desain dan ukurannya agak serupa dengan Onyx. Tapi bobotnya terasa lebih berat Torch.

Sebagian besar bodi Torch berbahan plastik glossy, kecuali unsur penutup baterai di belakang yang berbahan karet berkontur garis. Blackberry Torch 9800 dihiasi lubang Jack 3,5 mm headset, tombol volume dan tombol kamera di sisi kanan, dan port MicroUSB guna charger dan kabel data di samping kiri. Di bawah layar dicantumkan tombol Trackpad, Call, End Call, Back dan Option (tombol logo BlackBerry).

Layar sentuh di Torch tidak lagi mempunyai sifat Surepress laksana yang terdapat pada layar BlackBerry Storm. Dimana untuk menggiatkan fitur tidak lumayan dengan menyentuh layar tetapi pun harus mengurangi layar. Nah, layar sentuh Torch berupa layar sentuh biasa. Seperti RIM belajar dari empiris Storm yang tidak sedikit pemakainya mengeluh dengan cara layar sentuh Surepress.

Tampilan menu di layar Torch terbagi menjadi 5 homescreen (All, Favorite, Media, Downloads, Frequent), yang dapat diganti dengan mengelus layar ke kanan/kiri. Untuk menimbulkan tampilan menu utama, dengan ‘menyeret’ ke atas tombol panah yang sedang di bagian bawah layar. Sensor gerak telah dipendam di Torch yang bermanfaat untuk Auto rotate. Tampilan di layar ini tampak luas dan tajam. Di samping dengan menyentuh layar, akses menu juga dapat dengan tombol Trackpad.

Empat tombol yang terdapat di sebelah kanan dan kiri Trackpad, sekilas laksana berjenis touchpad, ternyata berupa tombol biasa yang mesti ditekan. Untuk menerbitkan tombol qwerty, lumayan geser unsur layar ke atas. Tombol qwerty terasa lunak ditekan, posisinya dan ukurannya pun nyaman. Ternyata layar sentuh Torch pun menyimpan tombol qwerty virtual di layar. Akses internet di Torch terasa cepat. Ini sebab Torch dapat mensuport sampai jalur HSDPA/HSUPA (3,5 G).

Atau juga dapat internet di hotspot via koneksi WiFi. Saat browsing, browser dapat membuka sejumlah situs sekaligus (multitasking). Selain tersebut situs apa saja yang sedang dibuka dapat dilihat secara berjejer. Dan ini adalahfitur baru yang diangkut OS BlackBerry 6. Browser dilengkapi dengan sejumlah fasilitas, laksana : Find on Page (mencari kata), Send Page Address (mengirim alamat situs), Copy Page Address, dan Search (via Google, Yahoo, Live Search, Wikipedia, Dictionary.com). Bagi Zoom In/Out halaman situs dapat dengan teknik ‘mencubit’ layar atau multitap (dua kali tekan layar).

Saat halaman website diperbesar, dapat memilih unsur mana dari website yang hendak dilihat, dengan lumayan mengusap layar. Social FeedSocial Feed pun menjadi fitur baru yang diangkut OS Blackberry 6. Fitur ini dapat menggabungkan update kedudukan dari Facebook, Twitter, My Space, dll. Juga dapat ditambahkan RSS Feeds dan chatting dari BlackBerry Messenger, Google Talk, AOL Instant Messaging, Windows Live Messenger dan Yahoo Messenger. Tapi dapat juga difilter sehingga diperlihatkan per aplikasi.

Bila berganti antar aplikasi, lumayan usap layar ke kanan atau kiri. Di sini juga dapat hanya dengan mengetikkan satu status, maka akan diantarkan ke beberapa software sekaligus (Facebook, Twitter, dll). Untuk dapat merasakan fitur ini, maka mesti Log In terlebih dahulu ke tiap software online. Untuk mengabadikan momen tertentu, Blackberry Torch 9800 dilengkapi dengan kamera 5 megapiksel. Di dalamnya ditemani kemudahan seperti: Autofocus, Flash, Face Detection, Portrait, Sport, Landscape, Close up, Image Stab ilization, Scene dan Geotagging.  Hasil potret dan dapat dikirim via email, MMS atau ke facebook.

Kamera juga dapat merekam video, dengan hasilnya berupa video berresolusi maksimal 640 x 480 piksel. Foto dapat dilihat secara Zoom In/Out dengan teknik ‘mencubit’ atau multitap layar. Ada fitur View On Maps guna melihat tempat pemotretan potret pada peta digital.

Music Player di Torch mempunyai tampilan baru, yakni adanya tampilan animasi dari Album Art (gambar yang menyertai lagu) yang dipunyai tiap lagu. Jadi guna ganti lagu lumayan mengusap Album Art ke kana atau kiri. Music Player-nya sendiri dilengkapi dengan fitur Playlist, Shuffle, Repeat, Equalizer (12 pilihan) dan Audio Boost. Suara lagu yang terbit dari speaker di bodi atas tersiar nyaring dan jernih.

Torch telah ditanamkan GPS Receiver, yang dalam bekerja ditolong peta digital BlackBerry Maps. Saat menggiatkan BlackBerry Maps, otomatis langsung mendeteksi dimana tempat ponsel berada. Setelah itu dapat mengirim titik lokasi tersebut (Send Location), mencari tempat tertentu lainnya (Find Location) atau memahami rute mengarah ke ke tempat tertentu (Get Direction). Tampilan peta digital dapat di Zoom In/Out dengan teknik ‘mencubit’atau multitap.

Jangan lupa, akses Blackberry Maps memerlukan koneksi internet Mobile OfficeTorch ternyata dapat digunakan untuk menolong pekerjaan, khususnya yang bersangkutan dengan dokumen. Ini sebab sudah terdapat fitur Mobile Office yang terpendam di ponsel.

Fitur ini masih mempunyai sifat trial, namun di samping membuka file office (word, excel, power point), ternyata juga dapat mengedit file office langsung dari ponsel. Sedangkan untuk menciptakan file baru mesti diupgrade ke versi full dengan teknik membeli. Mobile Office antara beda dilengkapi fitur ‘Copy/Cut – Paste’ teks, dan fitur ‘Find’ untuk menggali kata tertentu, dan fitur lainnya. Mobile Office pun sudah mensuport file Office 2007.

Blackberry Application World (App World) adalah toko online guna mendownload software dan game. Di Torch, App World yang terinstall telah berversi 2.0 (terbaru). Fitur baru yang dihadirkan yakni adanya BlackBery ID (pendaftaran). Lalu terdapat barcode yang saat di-scan akan memperlihatkan info dari aplikasi.

Sistem pembayaran guna membeli software juga semakin mudah, via PayPal atau kartu kredit. Serta menu ‘Top 25’ yang dapat menampilkan 25 software terfavorit lebih komplit menurut kelompok recently update, paid apps, free apps, newest. Jika belum mempunyai BlackBerry ID dapat langsung membuatnya di App World.
