Pertengahan tahun 2011 ini adalah waktunya RIM untuk  merilis ponsel-ponsel terbarunya, semenjak kurun masa-masa yang tidak sebentar, mereka dapat dikatakan agak lamban menerbitkan produk ponsel-ponsel anyarnya. Di samping BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 Dakota, RIM pun merilis ponsel BlackBerry yang dirasakan dapat menyaingi popularitas iPhone.

BlackBerry ini mengangkat layar sentuh (full touch screen), dan tidak sedikit orang menduga bahwa ponsel ini ialah generasi ketiga dari Storm, sebenarnya tidak demikian, ponsel ini bernamanya BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 dengan sebutan Monaco dan Monza. Apa perbedaan antara BlackBerry Torch 9850 Monaco dan 9860 Monza? Dua-duanya mempunyai fitur yang sama, hanya saja 9850 Monaco dapat dipakai untuk CDMA dan GSM, sementara 9860 Monza cuma untuk GSM saja.

Ponsel BlackBerry Torch 9860 memiliki keistimewaan yaitu ponsel ini adalah ponsel berlayar sangat lebar dari ponsel-ponsel BlackBerry sebelumnya yatu 3.7 inches (dibanding ukuran layar Storm yang 3.25 inches masih agak kalah besar). Keunggulan khas yang tidak dipunyai BlackBerry Storm ialah di BlackBerry Monaco/Monza ini mempunyai Optical Trackpad. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa ponsel BlackBerry 9850/9860 ini bukan Storm tetapi generasi dari Torch.

Bentuk dari BlackBerry 9850/9860 ini pada sisi depan ada layar berukuran 3.7 inches, lampu LED diatas kanan (disamping speaker ponsel), dan 5 tombol dibagian bawah yang salah satunya diposisi tengah ialah tombol Trackpad yang bentuknya agak menjulang dari tombol-tombol lainnya.

Di sisi atas cuma ada satu tombol kunci (lock), di sisi bawah terdapat speaker dan lubang microphone. Pada sisi samping kanan terlihat tombol kamera, tombol pengeras suara atas/bawah dan lubang jack guna earphone. Disebelah samping kiri terdapat lubang MicroUSB. Dan disisi belakang ada lensa kamera inilah lampu kilat (LED flash). Balutan casing dengan material plastik dan karetnya tampak rapih dan manis, sisi depan dengan nuansa warna hitam, kemudian pada sisi sisi samping dibungkus dengan warna chrome dan sisi belakang dengan warna abu-abu gelap.

Dengan rancangan desain dan format seperti tersebut membuat BlackBerry Torch 9860 menjadi ponsel yang manis dan menggoda mata. Ponsel tidak terasa besar maupun kecil di tangan, ukurannya pas disaat cengkeraman tangan. Ini adalah layar terbesar dimana RIM membuat ponsel-ponsel pintarnya. Namun besarnya layar ini lebih condong memanjang kebawah, anda akan dapat menikmati layar dengan scroll ke bawah yang begitu panjang dibanding ponsel pintar lainnya.

Hal ini dapat saja menjadi urusan positif, tapi dapat juga terdapat negatifnya yaitu untuk yang terbiasa memakai ponsel berlayar besar (lebar kesamping) laksana pada BlackBerry Bold 9900 Dakota atau ponsel pintar lainnya yang berukuran besar maka kita menikmati bagan layar terasa sempit, tapi urusan ini tidak terlampau signifikan barangkali akan melulu dapat dirasakan untuk para pemakai yang tidak jarang ganti-ganti ponsel. Dengan mengangkat sistem operasi BlackBerry OS 7, tampilan di layar lebih segar, enteng dan halus. Pergeseran navigasi (animasi) terlihat paling mulus, begitu pun dengan bila menyaksikan gambar-gambar di galeri potret terlihat cepat dan pun ringan.

BlackBerry Torch 9860 didukung dengan kamera belakang 5 MP yang dilengkapi dengan LED Flash (lampu kilat), dan yang terpenting juga ialah dilengkapi fitur Autofocus (berbeda dengan saudaranya si BlackBerry Bold 9900 Dakota yang tidak mempunyai fitur ini, padahal dua-duanya adalah ponsel-ponsel keluaran teranyar dari RIM). Hasil kamera lumayan baik, sampai-sampai ponsel ini dapat dibilang tidak akan membuat kecewa soal kameranya. BlackBerry 9850/9860 ini mempunyai keyboard virtual, yang dapat dipakai baik disaat posisi berdiri maupun landscape.

Pada ketika posisi landscape pengetikan dirasakan lumayan nyaman, sementara bila diposisikan dalam situasi berdiri maka keyboard qwerty-nya terasa kecil-kecil, untuk yang mempunyai tangan berjari-jari besar barangkali akan tidak banyak sulit mengetiknya. Disarankan untuk yang berjari-jari besar pakai pengetikan dalam posisi landscape.

Dalam urusan multimedia, nyaris semua produk tipe-tipe ponsel BlackBerry dapat dibilang handal. Bagi BlackBerry 9950/9960 ini guna speaker dirasa tidak cukup keras dan sedikit tidak cukup nyaring suara yang dihasilkannya dibanding ponsel BlackBerry lainnya.
